Keuka Ice Fishing Produces Lake Trout

20" laker
Spent Friday night on Keuka Lake at my good friend Shu's home.  We enjoyed an excellent dinner at the Valley Inn.  In the morning we got up to a bright beautiful  sunrise, but the temperature was -6 and that is never any fun.  So we went to Penn Yan and got minnows at the Beverage Baron.  Shiners, fatheads, and spikes was our bait selection.

Three of us set out in front of Shu's house just south of his docks as he has bubblers keeping ice from forming.  Set a line of tip ups from 10 feet to 60 feet with spikes and fatheads....caught nothing.  Dave jigged up a lake trout on a swim bait and I caught a lake on a shiner.  Both were in about 70 feet of water.  Fished for three hours.  We had a new StrikeMaster Strike Lite II gas auger and it was amazing.  I will never go back to a hand auger again!
3-4 inches of ice

Keuka is kinda dicy ice wise as there are several large cracks with open water.  Also, once the holes were open they never re-froze even though the temperature was in the teens. I know there are some pretty good currents in this lake so I am wondering if that was moving warmer water near the surface.....dunno....Catching lake trout through the ice was an absolute blast, plus they taste phenomenal this time of year.  We will go back next weekend.
