Lake Ontario and Oak Orchard

Friday I took a vacation day and went out fishing on Lake Ontario with Dave and his cousin Tom. We took his 19' Grady White, 150 HP Honda and launched at Golden Hill State Park. We were met at the boat ramp by a Bureau of Fisheries employee. He just wanted to know what we were fishing for. The lake was like glass when we started at 6:30. After a slow start our first hit came on Dave's fly rod....that's right his fly rod was one of the rods he had trolling a crank bait. He explained the fly rod provided a unique action that could entice neutral salmon....I never saw anything like it! Well the salmon leaped completely out of the water and broke the leader. We hooked 5 and we lost 5. The wind started to come up from the east and Dave suggested we go in. I did not think the wind was too unreasonable with 1-3' seas, but his experience on Lake Ontario told him it was just the beginning and he was right. We started to head in and not 10 minutes later the Lake went to 3-5' seas, amazing, I had heard many times that the lake can turn like that, but it was the first time I experienced it. We ran 2 miles to the boat launch and I was thinking I was glad we did not go 13 miles out for rainbows which we were pondering earlier in the day as we were smashing up and down on the swells. We pulled the Grady White and grabbed his 40hp Lund. We put in next at Oak Orchard Creek where we caught brown trout, pike, perch, and an ugly fish called goby. This picture is of Tom the next day with a nice salmon.
