Last weekend Shu and I participated in the Chautauqua Lake Musky tournament. Capt. Larry Jones did a great job of putting together a fun program to compliment the fishing. The money raised by this tournament was used to pay the NYS DEC to keep the musky fingerlings in their ponds a little longer before releasing them.
One of the speakers on the first night was the musky historian Larry Ramsell who showed over 100 pictures of 50 pound plus muskys caught through the ages. Each one had a great story. One story featured a picture of a 50+inch musky hanging vertically alongside a proudly well dressed woman in the 1920s. This fish had a large bullet hole in the middle of its tail which came from a disgruntled male angler who was so frustrated with trying to catch it that he took a shot at it. A few seconds later the well dressed woman hooked it.
A couple of local musky angling greats, Pat and Chip, shared great stories with us on Saturday as we sought shelter in Bemus Point from a rain storm. Chip shared a couple of his impressive homemade lures with me and I cannot wait to try them.
In terms of the fishing. I saw one musky and it was a unique sighting. This was a 40+inch musky chasing bait fish on the inside weedline at Bayview Point. I saw her twice. I have always read about fishing the inside weedline, but had always been luke warm about it.....not anymore :-) I believe a total of 8 muskys were caught in the tournament with the largest a little over 48 inches.
The lake temperature was in the high 60's no where were weeds visible to the surface. On the second day we went way up into Celoron casting over the weed beds. The weeds were still two feet below the surface where normally it is choked with weeds this time of year.
We stayed at We Wan Chu, rented a boat there, and will come back in the fall to try again.
Today Jake and I head to Nettogami for week of fishing via Air Cochrane....
