Chautauqua Lake Musky Fishing Continues

The one that got away....

Well, my brother Clint and I fished the northern end of Chautauqua Lake on Monday. It was a beautiful day with lots of sun, peak colors, and geese on their migration. The water temperature was 59 degrees on the surface and the moon was waning, but almost full. I only had one hit and it was a beautiful 40+ inch muskellunge. This fish struck on the eastern weedline on a large spinner bait that I was ripping across the top of the weeds in 12 feet of water.

An interesting, and maybe noteworthy observation, was that this fish struck in the last half an hour of the moon set. On my way to Mayville, the night before, I was listening to a Muskie First podcast and one of the experts explained that the musky bite turns on the last and first 30 minutes of a moon rise/set. hhhhmmmm.......
