This morning had me waking up to downpours, but an unusually warm wind. The dark clouds delayed the arrival of daylight and allowed me extra time to find my heavy duty rain gear. JP had called me the night before saying he had a good hit on a buck at dusk. We talked strategy as we both knew there was an approaching front bringing lots of rain making the search for a blood trail at dawn impossible. He had done the right thing. He made a good shot, marked where he last saw him, the direction the buck was going and slipped quietly out of the woods very quietly. Because he had not pushed the deer, we both agreed that the best strategy was to wait until dawn as the buck should not have gone very far.
This morning it was a downpour when I met JP at his stand where he had shot the deer. We were right about the rain, there was no chance of finding a blood trail. We laid out a grid and started dutifully working it. The warm wind made this morning work out absolutely beautiful. Geese were flying overhead and ducks were sq-waking on the pond. After an hour we found the 8 point. His hind quarter had been chewed up by coyotes so JP was calling the DEC to trade in the deer for a new tag.
