Mexico Baja California Sur Fishing December 2019

15 years ago I met Shu's nephew Dave on a fishing trip to Lake Haultain in Ontario.  I will never forget him catching a 44" northern pike on his very first cast.  Dave is a great fly fisherman and I would be in awe of his horse size flies that he threw for pike.  My children know of Dave from a favorite family story called "Poor Dave is Dead".  On the Haultain trip he slept under a bug tent on the edge of the lake.  One night a horrific thunder and lightening storm came in.  We could hear trees crashing and the wind whipping.  Dave never came inside.  We barked at Shu to go rescue his nephew, but he stayed in his bunk bed and sang "Poor Dave is Dead"...over and over.  Next morning we walked down to the lake around a bunch of freshly downed trees to Dave's crushed tent.  Peeling back the branches there laid Dave sound asleep and had never heard a thing.

Dave came to Nettogami a couple years ago with us and went on an overnight fly-in to a trout stream.  When they returned they each have a fever and heads swollen looking like they had the mumps.  They ran into swarms of mosquitos.  During this trip he invited us to Cabo Mexico to where he owned a place and he said the fishing was world class.

This past October Shu, me, and our wives were at the Cottage Hotel.  Shu and I recalled Dave's invitation and speculated whether or not Dave was serious.  Shu said "let's find out" and texted Dave.  Within five minutes we had a week in December booked with Rob Walsh, Shu, and I going to Mexico.

It was a spectacular trip.  It was so beautiful.  We flew into Cabo San Lucas which is a beautiful, but very touristy, city located on the ocean.  We rented a car and drove 2 hours north near La Ribera.  The last 30 minutes was down a windy dirt road that had huge pot holes, cows walking down it, and big swaths of water from a huge washout the week before.  The swaths of water were so deep that some cars were stranded in them.

Dave's place was beautiful.  20 feet off the Sea of Cortez and the famous Cabo Pulmo Marine Park.  We enjoyed a heavenly week of surf and charter boat fishing.  I rented a Razer and we would go for miles on the beach without seeing a house, boat, or another person.  I was amazed there was still places like this in the world.  La Ribera is quiet, poor, little town.  The people were very friendly and we discovered a tackle shop owned by a guy from Colorado.
Sammy Hagar's Place

The last night we stayed in Cabo San Lucas at a beautiful hotel.  We went to hear some live music at Sammy Hagar's place called Cabo Wabo.  The music was great.
